Artwork by Artist Wei Ong in Devonshire Square, Loughborough
The 60-metre artwork, brimming with images of Loughborough people and places, was commissioned in partnership with local businesses to improve the appearance of this busy retail area, generating local interest, involvement and pride.
A free guide has been produced to tell the stories behind the 2014 artwork. Many of the places are within walking distance of the site. You can find out more by picking up a copy of the guide from Loughborough Town Hall, Charnwood Museum, the Carillon Tower War Memorial and Museum, or the Library – all a stone’s throw from Devonshire Square.
If you’ve lived here for a while, many of the places will be familiar; if you are new to Loughborough, welcome, you’ll spot them soon enough!
We also have a piece of artwork that Wei produced on Lougborough Market during the consultation period, on display in Market Yard.
About the Artist, Wei Ong
The artist, Wei Ong, is based in Bristol.
Here’s how he approached the commission and his experience of working in Loughborough.
“I’ve presented the artwork as a timeline going through the seasons. This gave me a structure to work with. I then decided what to include by going out and about, talking to Loughborough people and business owners and by holding community consultation events.
“I wanted the image to be inviting and positive. It’s been created in my illustration style – bold, colourful and contemporary.
“Some people went out of their way to provide information, photos and directions to landmarks in Loughborough – which helped me do my homework! This was good because it meant people really cared. I felt I had a big responsibility to live up to.
“It was about a month before I even started to sketch ideas. The process was totally organic and unique; as an artist from outside the town, I was able to look at the area and its rich history with a fresh set of eyes.
“Loughborough has been a joy to work in; the people are friendly and shared their great sense of pride about living here. I find the history fascinating and am definitely taken by the lush countryside and woodlands.
“I always wanted to represent the diversity of the people who live here. I’ve included elements from in and around Loughborough, its different seasonal events and a few local characters. I hope it appeals to all ages and backgrounds.”
