Love Loughborough BID takes a positive stand on helping businesses tackle anti-social behaviour

Love Loughborough BID Ambassador, Celine Patel, plays a crucial role in the town to understand what issues are affecting businesses. Talking to and visiting businesses in Loughborough on a daily basis enables Celine to understand the problems as they arise. After listening to businesses in the town centre BID was concerned that there was a certain level of anti-social behaviour in Loughborough that was causing concern to some business owners and employees. This included shoplifting, begging and some problems with youth related behaviour.

 

BID approached the Leicestershire Youth Offending Service (Leics YOS) to see how we could help work in partnership to assist businesses with their concerns and to learn how to be best equipped to deal with challenging behaviour.

 

Leics YOS developed the Building Positive Relationships workshop which was aimed to train front facing staff to feel confident in preventing and dealing with challenging and sometimes aggressive behaviour. It also aimed to promote positive relationships between staff and young people. The workshop provided an excellent free opportunity for members of staff who deal with difficult youths on a daily basis.

 

The workshop took place on Wednesday 10th July and all 30 places that were on offer were filled. Therefore, due to the high demand, BID is looking to re-run the workshop so that more BID businesses can benefit from the guidance. The businesses that were in attendance varied from large national’s to smaller independents which included Wilko’s, Primark, McDonald’s, Peter Pizzeria, Loughborough Building Society, Marks and Spencer’s, the Police and Carillon Court shopping centre.

 

Julian Robertson & Glen White of the Leicestershire Youth Offending Service facilitated the workshop which ended with 5 key pointers:

 

  • If it works – do more of it; If it doesn’t work try something different
  • Persevere with building relationships
  • Prevention is better than reaction
  • Communicate with your colleagues and management
  • Be honest with yourself
