Switch On Stand Out – Social Media Program

With reports of falling footfall and declining trade in high-streets throughout the UK, social media has become an essential component in any company’s marketing strategy; helping to mobilise customer engagement and drive business growth.

‘Switch On Stand Out’ is a social media training programme developed by Loughborough Students’ Union Enterprise Hub to support, advise and train local businesses in the benefits of social media marketing.

To date the program has helped benefit over 80 local businesses and with the support of Charnwood Borough Council and Love Loughborough the program is set to benefit even more companies and grow their understanding of using social media as a marketing tool for their business.

With support ranging from drop-in clinics, workshops and training they hope to support all businesses across Charnwood whether they are independents or multi-nationals. The program is designed to give local businesses the opportunity to get up-to-date information and support on how to deliver successful campaigns and help to shape a strong and lasting local economy. The presence of vibrant and flourishing local businesses on our high street will help to ensure Charnwood remains an attractive place to live and visit.

Now in its 5th year, ‘Switch On Stand Out’ has grown in popularity as more and more businesses see the benefits of social media and the impact it can create for their business.

One local business commented, ‘Our student was very helpful and enthusiastic. Getting a younger perspective and learning new tricks was great.’

Another business commented ‘It was great to engage with a younger person’s perspective and to talk to someone who looked more critically at the business from the outside. The student volunteer was very pleasant and amicable, keen to learn and got involved. ‘

The program has been a success due to the positive engagement with the businesses and the enthusiasm of the students from Loughborough Students’ Union. One of the students from last year’s program told us, ‘ The greatest benefit from the program is the satisfaction of helping a local business.’

With the introduction of 3 networking evenings and social media drop-in sessions held across the borough, all businesses will get the opportunity to take advantage of this free program and develop their social media platforms which in turn will help to strengthen Charnwood’s social media business community.
